This stamp set displays the Mercury-Atlas 6 launch on February 20, 1962 when the United States sent their first astronaut, John Glenn, to orbit the earth. Each stamp shows a different step of the journey. The colors reflect the colors of the U.S. flag to enforce the patriotic feeling while the minimalist design reflects the mid-century modern aesthetic that was very popular at the time of the launch.
